Mixed spice and all things nice are the key ingredients to the new limited-edition Christmas pudding sausage from Waitrose, launching today (7 December 2009).
Made from pork shoulder and belly from outdoor bred pigs the sausage has a festive twist of mixed sultanas, orange and lemon zest, chopped apricots, prunes and dates coupled with cinnamon, all spice and the Christmas tipple favourite, brandy – creating the perfect talking point for the Christmas table this year.
It would be fair to say that Waitrose customers love to try something slightly unusual, with the berry banger proving a huge success during Wimbledon and most recently, the toffee apple sausage made exclusively for Bonfire Night. Both limited editions helped increase sausage sales by 10 per cent during the few weeks they were available to purchase.
For all those budding Heston Blumenthal’s, why not add a Christmas twist to some of your classic recipes? Forget the usual mash potato with your sausages and complement the dessert sausage with a drop of brandy sauce, some custard or Waitrose’s mince pie ice cream.
Anna Lloyd, Buyer for Pork, Bacon & Sausage at Waitrose, commented: “We are very excited about the Christmas pudding sausage as we know from previous limited editions that our customers enjoy trying the new and often slightly quirky. We are sure that the sausage will be making an appearance on quite a few Christmas dinner tables.”
The Christmas pudding sausage can be purchased on the meat counter in Waitrose stores nationwide at £5.99 per kg – approximately 45p per sausage.
