This year has seen many Britons return to the simple pleasures in life such as baking their own bread and growing their own fruit and veg. Everyone knows home-made always tastes better, and it seems more Lakeland customers have turned their hands to preserving their glut of summer fruit this year. Sales of the humble jam jar are up nearly 40 per cent compared to last year, and five essential jam making products currently feature in the company’s top 20 best sellers.
Since January, the home of creative kitchenware has sold over half a million jam jars – that’s enough to stretch three times the length of Lake Windermere. Put another way, that’s enough to jar the harvest from a 50,000 acre strawberry farm, and hold 180 tonnes of your favourite fruity preserve.
The rise in sales of Lakeland’s preserving ranges has indicated that more people are happy to devote the extra time and care to make their own preserves, and this tradition has gone from strength to strength in the last 12 months. Customers showed their passion for preserving like never before when the retailer launched the Tefal electric jam maker in 2008, which initially sold out completely, and has since become one of the best selling products.
As the number of people growing their own food has increased this year, Lakeland is ready to help them make the most of their harvest with its extended preserving range for the autumn. As well as key utensils like a straining funnel, preserving pan and jelly strainer, Lakeland is proud to welcome back the original Kilner Jars to its catalogue. The manufacturers have reintroduced this preserving classic after being inundated with requests, and the patented two-part lid is easy to use with a real guarantee of long-term freshness. Three new recipe books are also included in the Autumn catalogue with over 300 recipes for jam, marmalade, curd, butter, pickles, relishes, chutneys and ketchups between them.
Wendy Miranda, Lakeland’s Customer Ambassador and keen jam maker said, ‘More and more of our customers are embracing the make-it-yourself trend this year by giving jam making a try. They are taking great pleasure and satisfaction from creating their own preserves and whether they intend to enjoy it themselves, or give as an extra special home-made gift, it seems our customers just can’t get enough of jam!’
