Leading department store Selfridges is to launch the UK’s first designer
carrier bag in celebration of its 100thbirthday.
Selfridges’ Creative Director, Alannah Weston approached four British
designers – Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, Stella McCartney and Giles
Deacon to put their design on Selfridges’ iconic yellow carrier bag.
The bag’s reverse says ‘Open To The World Since 1909’,
a phrase placed by Selfridges’ founder, Gordon Selfridge in the opening
week of the store.
The five limited edition bags will launch in Selfridges’ stores nationwide
May 1st, available to customers in fashion and accessories and are set to
become collector’s items with customers already trying to pre-order
in advance.
Paul Smith said of his design: "I wanted to keep the design simple
and direct but the main point was to use as much hand drawing as possible.
In a world which is so full of computer generated artwork I really want
to encourage a return to more handmade work."
Giles Deacon said of his design: "As one of the most iconic department
stores in the world, it is super exciting to be involved in the Selfridges
Centenary celebrations"
Alannah Weston, Selfridges Creative Director said: "Our centenary won't
be a dull and dusty time-warp - we are going to be a bright ray of sunshine
yellow giving London a smile for the month of May and beyond."
