Peacocks, the UK’s leading value retailer has reported a 34 per cent year on year increase in sales of accessories.
A plethora of accessories are currently selling faster than stocks are being replenished at Peacocks stores nationwide. As the recession sinks further, Brits seek solace in affordable pick-me-ups that won’t impact on their weekly budget as sales of hats, bags, shoes and scarves continue to increase, defying the credit crunch.
Hats are this season’s fastest growing fashion accessory, up 108 per cent on the year (Feb 2008 to Feb 2009) with Peacocks’ £12 top hat in grey and pink current best sellers. Neckerchiefs are no longer confined to the air line cabin, as celebrities including Victoria Beckham help to bring the ‘dolly trolley staple’ back down to ground level, experiencing a 134 per cent increase on the year (Feb 2008 to Feb 2009).
Chanel style quilted gold chain bag – a snip at £8 –
is Peacocks’ most popular bag, with over 14.000 sold since the start
of the year.
Tim Bettley, Peacocks' Managing Director said: " Today’s fashion
customers are incredibly savvy, they know that they don’t have to
buy a complete new outfit to work the latest look. It’s not the twentieth
century lipstick factor, we call it the twenty first century top hat factor.”
