Superdrug warns today that a much-feared sideline of the recession is on its way – creative male facial hair.
Looking back through past UK recessions it is clear that key political figures at every time wore distinctive facial hair, whether it be unruly eyebrows or luxuriant moustaches.
It’s not just politicians that let their hair grow in times of recession; celebrities and the man on the street also take note. Liam Gallagher stepped out last week sporting Elvis style side burns, and Brad Pitt walked down the red carpet at the Baftas wearing a ‘tache.
Simon Comins, Director of Health & Impulse comments: “History shows that when the economy falters men’s hair becomes more important. We’ve seen sales of male grooming rise 25 per cent compared to this time last year with styling waxes amongst the best sellers. While Alistair Darling’s eyebrows ensure he is on trend for the tough time ahead we believe that Gordon Brown needs to take heed from history and give himself a man-hair make-over.”
Superdrug has added a men’s home hair cutting kit complete with clippers for hair, moustaches and side-burns to its range to help stylish men get the correct look for the 2009 recession (£24.46). A clipper kit and a pack of styling wax suitable for eyebrows, moustaches or hair has been delivered to Number Ten Downing Street.
Superdrug is currently selling over 5,000 jars of men’s hair wax every week.
