Waitrose & Partners predicts this weekend will be the busiest one for the nation to pick their Christmas tree, with one expected to sell every eight seconds at the supermarket this weekend.
This year the supermarket is offering its widest range of British Christmas trees – including a UK grown Noble Fir variety – as more people than ever look to extend their tree repertoire beyond just the traditional centrepiece tree. The Noble Fir variety, available in selected branches*, has a distinct bluey green tinge to the needles which give off a fantastic Christmassy pine aroma.
Oliver O’Mara, Christmas tree buyer at Waitrose & Partners says: ‘We expect the Great British tree rush to start in earnest this weekend. And, with many customers no longer content with just a solitary centrepiece tree we expect to sell our widest range ever as customers look to add different trees and festive cheer to different corners of their home’.
In addition to traditional Christmas wreaths and trees, Waitrose & Partners is also offering light up Yucca plants and Rosemary Christmas trees – perfect for brightening up any room or outdoor space.
All Waitrose Christmas trees are grown on the Black Isle, near Inverness, by Kjeld Kristensen (pictured) and over 130 of his colleagues who work tirelessly harvesting the trees which are hand-pruned to ensure the best shape.
The trees carry the LEAF Marque, meaning they have been lovingly grown by farmers who care for the countryside and wildlife that live there. Managing hedgerows and providing habitats and food for wildlife are one of the many things the growers, Needlefresh, do to be an assured LEAF Marque supplier, as well as recycling waste and conserving energy.
This year Waitrose & Partners has also revealed that customers are starting their Christmas planning earlier than ever, with 17% more shoppers than last year rushing to book their Waitrose.com festive delivery slots on the opening day.
